Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit review (PS5)

Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit doesn’t try to reinvent the formula established by its predecessor, and that’s largely to its benefit. Once again we step into the shoes of a Spirit Scout, this time stranded on a mysterious island after a bus accident, where helping ghostly bears come to terms with their past becomes the heart of the adventure. The premise remains wonderfully wholesome, balancing lighthearted charm with surprisingly heartfelt storytelling as each new spirit gradually reveals more about themselves. Rather than relying on dramatic twists, the narrative succeeds through its warmth and the growing sense of community that develops as the island slowly comes back to life.

The gameplay loop will feel immediately familiar to anyone who enjoyed the original Cozy Grove. Daily quests revolve around gathering resources, crafting furniture, fishing, bug catching, solving simple environmental tasks and helping the island’s quirky residents. As you complete requests, more color returns to the world and new areas gradually open up, giving every completed task a satisfying sense of progress. Feeding Flamey to expand the island remains a clever progression mechanic, while additions like animal companions, expanded customization options and a water-sprayer tool for cleaning the environment give the sequel a little more variety without disrupting its relaxed pacing.

That said, Camp Spirit remains intentionally uncomplicated. The various activities are relaxing rather than demanding, making this a game that’s more about unwinding than mastering deep systems. For players looking for a calm daily ritual that’s exactly the point, but those expecting more strategic depth or meaningful mechanical evolution may find the experience repetitive after extended sessions. It feels more like a carefully refined continuation than a bold new direction, even if the numerous quality-of-life improvements make it the strongest version of the formula so far.

One aspect that might divide players is the real-time progression system. Story progression is deliberately limited each day, encouraging short play sessions before asking you to return tomorrow. While this fits the game’s philosophy of building a relaxing routine rather than encouraging marathon sessions, it can also make the adventure feel artificially restricted, especially when you’re fully invested in a particular character’s storyline. Fortunately, there are still plenty of optional activities available after the daily objectives are complete, although they don’t always provide the same sense of meaningful progression.

On PlayStation 5, the controls translate comfortably from the game’s mobile origins. Navigating menus, interacting with objects and managing your inventory all feel intuitive with a controller, and the simplicity of the gameplay means few actions ever become frustrating. The new cleaning mechanic occasionally feels a little less elegant than the rest of the toolset, but overall the console version provides a smooth and accessible experience without notable technical distractions.

Visually, Camp Spirit continues to be one of the most distinctive life simulators around. Its beautiful watercolor presentation gives every screen the appearance of a living storybook, while the gradual restoration of color across the island reinforces the game’s uplifting themes. Character designs are wonderfully expressive, the environments are packed with charming little details, and the gentle soundtrack perfectly complements the laid-back atmosphere. Rather than overwhelming players with spectacle, the audiovisual presentation consistently supports the game’s central message of kindness, patience and finding comfort in small moments.

Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit is exactly the sequel many fans were hoping for: familiar, polished and packed with more lovable characters to help. It doesn’t dramatically expand on the original’s foundations, and its time-gated progression remains an acquired taste, but its heartfelt writing, relaxing gameplay loop and gorgeous artistic presentation make it easy to lose yourself in for a little while each day. If you’re looking for an action-packed adventure this won’t be the right campsite for you, but for players seeking a comforting escape that rewards patience and compassion, Camp Spirit offers another wonderfully cozy stay on the island.
