Few franchises embody the side-scrolling brawler like Double Dragon. Its arcade debut back in 1987 (along with the countless home conversions that followed) helped define the genre, inspiring countless imitators and successors along the way. Now, Arc System Works and YUKE’S are teaming up to bring the series back with Double Dragon Revive, a modern reimagining that aims to honor the past while making the experience more approachable for today’s players. After going hands-on at Gamescom, it’s clear this revival has both nostalgia and new ideas working in its favor, though its updated look and feel might not be to everyone’s taste. Fata Deum – The God Sim review (PC)
Aerosoft is best known for its catalogue of simulation titles, ranging from truck driving to urban management, so seeing them publish Fata Deum – The God Sim feels like a surprising departure. Developed by 42 Bits Entertainment, the game taps into a genre that once thrived with classics like Black & White but has been largely dormant for the past two decades. It’s an attempt to rekindle the spirit of being an omnipotent entity while giving players the freedom to rule with benevolence, cruelty, or somewhere in between – and it’s out now in Early Access. 40 Sports Games in 1 review (Switch)
Breakfirst Games has returned to their compilation concept with 40 Sports Games in 1, published by Maximum Entertainment for the Nintendo Switch. Building on the earlier 34 Sports Games in 1, this new version promises more variety, more content, and a wider scope of challenges. At first glance, it resembles the Olympic-style multi-event packages of old, offering everything from football and volleyball to archery, golf, and even some more unusual options. The appeal is obvious: with forty different events on offer, there’s bound to be something that clicks with players of different tastes. Continue reading “40 Sports Games in 1 review (Switch)”
Street Gods preview (Gamescom)
VR has had its fair share of action roguelites by now, but Soul Assembly’s Street Gods takes a particularly bold swing. By colliding Norse mythology with a fractured, urban New York setting, it sets itself apart right from the start. The big hook, of course, is Mjolnir itself – the hammer of Thor, placed in your hands with convincing physicality. After going hands-on with the game at Gamescom, it’s clear this one has both spectacle and ambition, though it might also ask players to get over a bit of a learning curve before it really clicks. Port roundup: Robots at Midnight, Heading Out, Fling to the Finish & SF3RA
The past few months have seen a steady stream of indie titles making the leap from PC to PlayStation 5, giving console players a chance to experience some of the more distinctive projects from smaller studios. From the acrobatic combat and retro-futuristic world of Robots at Midnight to the moody road trip of Heading Out, these ports highlight a range of ideas that don’t easily fit into standard genre boxes. There’s also room for multiplayer mayhem in Fling to the Finish, which thrives on chaotic co-op antics, and a retro throwback in SF3RA, a precision platformer with old-school flair. Together, they showcase the eclectic variety of recent PS5 arrivals, each carrying over both the strengths and quirks of their original releases.
