Sigi – A Fart for Melusina by pixel.lu, as if the title didn’t already give it away, doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s a fun little diversion in the shape of a retro platformer, and it’s out for Xbox One, PS4, Switch, PC and the Playstation Vita. We tested the latter.
When I say “little diversion”, I mean that in the sense that the entire game takes less than an hour to complete for someone who regularly plays a platformer. Luckily, the game has a price point to match that game length, and there aren’t too many platformers available for the Vita at this kind of budget price.
Almost entirely based around the core concept of a lead character who has a serious gas problem, Sigi – A Fart for Melusina looks like an 8-bit (or fairly basic 16-bit platformer from the early nineties. You play as a knight (called Sigi), and you’re in love with Melusina – whom you have to save. The bad news is that plenty of crazy bad guys stand in your way – witches, trolls, and a green version of Hulk Hogan, just to name a few.
The platforming action in Sigi is fairly straightforward and offers little in the way of surprises, though the boss fights pose a more serious challenge. As I mentioned, you can blaze through the game in under an hour without too much trouble, and the developer even claims it’s possible in under 30 minutes. While I enjoy short games (when I hear “40 hour campaign!!!” I don’t even bother trying), Sigi borders on having the length of a demo rather than a full game.
Luckily, a few elements stretch out the game’s length, like the ability to hunt for hidden loot and secrets – so completionists will certainly get some extra enjoyment out of the game. If you’re not, then a lot will depend on how much you enjoy fart humor and other silly comedy. For me, the game resonated well with my inner seven year old boy – but others might not feel the same way.
The game certainly doesn’t pose much of a financial risk at its price point, so it’s worth a try if you enjoy a simple platformer to spend an hour with. Just don’t expect the next Shovel Knight.
