Venba review (PS4)

In a lovely new example of indie game design, Visai Games presents Venba – a captivating ‘narrative cooking experience’ that goes beyond the kitchen. Players embark on an emotional journey with an Indian immigrant family, while the game skillfully intertwines the joy of authentic South Indian cuisine with the challenges of cultural assimilation, creating a resonant and heartwarming tale that leaves a lasting impression beyond the game’s short runtime. We checked it out on a PlayStation 4.

At its core, Venba introduces us to the eponymous character, an immigrant mother navigating life’s hurdles in a foreign land alongside her husband Paavalan and son Kavin. Through its well-crafted vignettes, the game adeptly portrays the family’s ups and downs, offering a poignant exploration of love, loss, and the intricate balance between tradition and adaptation.

The narrative is undoubtedly the game’s strongest suit, pulling players into a richly detailed world where the aromatic allure of Indian dishes isn’t just an aesthetic addition, but a vital thread woven into the very fabric of the story. As we delve into Venba’s culinary adventures, we witness her using food as a means of communication, a bridge between generations, and a source of comfort amidst life’s uncertainties.

The gameplay gracefully melds cooking with puzzle-solving, as players recreate recipes from an old cookbook. While the initial puzzles provide a satisfying challenge, the complexity somewhat wanes as the story unfolds. Yet, the interactive aspect remains engaging, offering a window into the artistry of South Indian cuisine and, in turn, the characters’ lives.

Visually, Venba enchants players with its vibrant, stylized art that aims to capture the essence of Tamil culture. The carefully designed visuals bring the family’s emotions to life, juxtaposing joy and melancholy against a backdrop of intricate sarees and mouthwatering dishes. The game’s soundtrack, inspired by Tamil music, further elevates the experience, effectively evoking a sense of nostalgia and belonging.

While Venba masterfully paints a portrait of the titular character and her family, it occasionally leaves us yearning for deeper explorations. The game’s runtime, while deliberately concise, limits opportunities to delve into certain characters’ backgrounds and fully delve into themes such as death, resulting in moments that feel slightly underdeveloped – or at least in topics that we would not have minded exploring further.

In conclusion, Venba is a delightful journey that whets both the appetite and emotions. It navigates the complexities of cultural identity with grace, inviting players to appreciate the significance of heritage and the bonds that tie families together. While it may occasionally miss opportunities for deeper exploration, the game’s genuine storytelling, charming visuals, and cultural immersion make it a satisfying and memorable experience. Venba is a heartwarming testament to the power of storytelling through both food and familial connections, and serves up a delectable blend of flavors that’s sure to leave a lasting impression, long after the final dish is served.
