Strictly Limited and Atari Team Up as I, Robot Kicks Off New Physical Publishing Partnership

Strictly Limited has announced a new publishing partnership with Atari, marking a collaboration that bridges classic arcade heritage with modern-day collector culture. The agreement sees the two companies joining forces to produce premium physical editions of both new and legacy titles, with a shared focus on preservation and tangible ownership in an increasingly digital market.

The first release under this partnership is I, Robot, a reimagining of the obscure 1984 arcade original, now reworked by Jeff Minter in his unmistakable audiovisual style. The game launches as a Strictly Limited Edition on PlayStation 5, capped at just 1,000 individually serialized copies. Each unit includes a printed manual, positioning it squarely as a collector’s item aimed at enthusiasts of both retro gaming and boutique physical releases.

Minter’s take on I, Robot leans heavily into his signature design philosophy, combining psychedelic visuals with reactive audio design. Players guide an ox-headed robot through a series of tile-based levels, avoiding the gaze of an all-seeing eye while flipping tiles to progress. Completing stages leads into fast-paced tube-shooter sequences, blending genres in a way that feels deliberately experimental.

The package includes 55 levels spanning both platforming and arena-style challenges, alongside online leaderboards and procedural music that evolves with player performance. True to form, the presentation is a sensory overload of color and motion, reinforcing the game’s identity as something distinctly unconventional – even within the retro revival space.

For Strictly Limited, the partnership represents a continuation of its mission to produce high-end physical editions that celebrate gaming history. Meanwhile, Atari’s involvement underscores its ongoing strategy of revitalizing legacy properties through collaborations with developers and publishers who can reinterpret them for modern audiences without losing their original identity.

With I, Robot kicking off the initiative, the partnership signals a broader push toward curated, collectible releases that appeal to both nostalgia-driven players and newcomers interested in gaming’s more experimental roots.
