Immortal Realms: Vampire Wars preview (PC)

Already available for pre-purchase, Immortal Realms: Vampire Wars is the first game in this trio of titles that will come out. In fact, if you decide to pre-purchase now then you can already get started on the Beta. It’s expected to launch during the spring, so the version we saw was pretty far into development.

Dubbed as “Total War meets turn-based meets vampires” by its creators, Immortal Realms is exactly that. Featuring three different campaigns with three different vampire clans, you start off with the (familiar) Dracul bloodline but will also be able to play with the ancient Nosfernus (think Nosferatu) and the Moroia, a race of vampires that has an aristocratic lifestyle. Each clan has their own strengths and weaknesses, which evolve as you unlock new technologies and abilities.

There’s a story-driven narrative that’s told through cutscenes and missions objectives, which from the demo appear to mostly be battle-centric in nature. Something else that stuck out during the demo is the influence that card-based mechanics have on the game. At any time, you have a deck of cards available to play that signifies which attacks you can unleash or which boosts you can apply. You can also take a gamble and trade your cards in for different ones, but their role in the game seems like a crucial one so that could be something to set Immortal Realms apart from other strategy titles.

That, along with the vampire theme, should make for an interesting mix. We shouldn’t have to wait too long to find out though – fingers crossed for a release date announcement soon!

The video below highlights some of the turn-based combat in the game, as well as some of the unit-specific special attacks you can use.
