Developer interview: Leisure Suit Larry – Wet Dreams Dry Twice

Last month, publisher Assemble Entertainment announced a brand new sequel in the legendary Leisure Suit Larry series of adventure games, once pioneered by Al Lowe and the team at Sierra. It’s being developed by CrazyBunch, who brought Larry back to a more recognizable formula with Wet Dreams Don’t Dry after the 2000s gave us a few entries in the franchise that most fans would rather forget about. What can we expect from the new game? We talked to Malte Schmidt, CEO at CrazyBunch, about how they’re planning to follow their well-received 2018 game.

Wet Dreams Don’t Dry was the first proper new Larry adventure game in over 20 years. How important was it to go back to the adventure game roots of the series?

It was very essential to our idea of creating a new Leisure Suit Larry game. Since the most beloved Larry games are point and click or graphic adventures it was clear for us to build on those genres. Also, our whole team has a background in creating P&C adventures and we all are huge adventure fans, especially the older Sierra and LucasArts adventures. So, creating a classic adventure with crazy AND sexy puzzles was like a dream come true for us.

When and how did the idea of a rebooting Leisure Suit Larry come about?

I got a direct Facebook message from Stefan Marcinek, Founder and CEO of Assemble Entertainment. He said he had something important to discuss with me and invited us to their office. As we arrived, he revealed that his company had acquired the rights to create a new Leisure Suit Larry game and asked us if we were interested in developing it for them. Assemble Entertainment already had the idea that Larry Laffer would be transferred to our present time. From that we immediately created a rough concept: We wanted to confront Larry with our modern and progressive society and see what would happen if we did.

How do you get the all-important tone just right for the game, and did you work together with any of the original talent behind Larry?

I really think a lot of it comes from our very diverse and interdisciplinary team working on the game. We always try to pass ideas through the whole team and see what everybody has to contribute. Also, a lot of the puzzles and situations in the game come from exaggerated real-life experiences. That makes a lot of what happens to Larry very relatable. We also had a rule that every joke has to be on Larry and that Larry’s behaviour backfires a lot and he has to bear with the consequences which makes a lot of the humour of the game. Regarding the follow up question, since Al Lowe is retired and passed the torch, we never reached out to anyone of the original Sierra team.

Wet Dreams Don’t Dry had clear connections to the original Land of the Lounge Lizards game – does Wet Dreams Dry Twice also tie into the original series, and, if so, how?

Yes, most definitely! Wet Dreams Don’t Dry was very similar to Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards. There are a lot of small connections but also the main theme, the game world and premise were very alike.

With Wet Dreams Dry Twice we wanted to connect a lot to Leisure Suit Larry Goes Looking for Love (In Several Wrong Places) and Leisure Suit Larry 3: Passionate Patti in Pursuit of the Pulsating Pectorals. There are many connections to characters, locations, incidents and more. Try to find them all and send us an email when the game is out!

What were some of the bigger takeaways from the development and reception of Wet Dreams Don’t Dry?

The new sequel improves upon Wet Dreams Don’t Dry in many of the same ways that the original sequels improved upon Lounge Lizards: We added a lot more themes and variety to the locations of the game and much more depth to the story. Larry is still looking for love but now he also has to fend off an evil corporation that is after the love of Larry’s life, Faith, who disappeared at the end of Wet Dreams Don’t Dry. Larry just wants to find Faith but somehow gets involved in the mischievous doings of the evil corporation.

We also have some new game mechanics and minigames in the game. But because the reception of Wet Dreams Don’t Dry was so overwhelmingly positive, we decided to not change things up too much.
