The Talos Principle 2 review (PS5)

The Talos Principle 2, developed by Croteam and published by Devolver Digital, marks a triumphant return to the niche that is the philosophical puzzle game genre that it helped pioneer, expanding on the success of its predecessor. In this sequel, players step into the shoes of 1K, the thousandth android in a society striving to rebuild after the extinction of humanity. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of New Jerusalem, a city populated entirely by humanoid robots, each endowed with distinct human-like personalities. We played it on a PlayStation 5.

The core gameplay mechanics in The Talos Principle 2 remain faithful to the original, with a focus on solving intricate environmental puzzles by manipulating various elements. These include jammers, hexahedrons, and a host of new tools that escalate in complexity as the game progresses. The puzzles are once again brilliantly designed, introducing new mechanics at a steady pace, ensuring players are continually engaged throughout their 20-to-30-hour playthrough. Considering the game’s mid-level price point, this one offers amazing value for money – not just in terms of length but also in terms of production values.

The narrative, heavily steeped in Greek philosophy, is seamlessly integrated into the gameplay experience. Conversations with mythical characters and interactions with Elohim offer profound insights into themes like consciousness, existence, and morality – diving into the question of what it means to be human in a world populated by androids. The juxtaposition of philosophical musings with offbeat character humor creates a captivating narrative tapestry as well, making the story constantly engaging.

The game’s landscapes are exquisitely drawn, showcasing a blend of icy terrains, lush woodlands, and beautiful architectural wonders inspired by ancient times. The environments, along with the puzzles themselves, are punctuated by moments of awe and contemplation. The whole experience is very polished as well, and we assume that minor issues (such as a camera angle issue we ran into) will be solved post-launch.

With such a lengthy campaign, it’s no surprise that some of the puzzle types have a tendency to repeat themselves – bridge-creation ones in particular being a good example of this. As the puzzles are well-designed this isn’t too big of an issue, but those who crave constant mixups of puzzle types might get impatient.

In summary, however, The Talos Principle 2 masterfully combines inventive puzzle design with a rich, thought-provoking narrative. Its exploration of philosophical themes is balanced by moments of levity and engaging character interactions, making for a rare puzzle game with excellent writing. With its captivating landscapes, memorable characters, and challenging puzzles, Croteam has delivered a sequel that stands as a testament to the power of philosophical storytelling in gaming. It improves on the first game in nearly every way, and is quite possibly this year’s best game for puzzle enthusiasts. Beautiful to look at, challenging to play, and engaging from start to finish.
