Ikonei Island: An Earthlock Adventure review (PS5)

Ikonei Island: An Earthlock Adventure, developed by Snowcastle Games and published by Jetpack Collective, invites players to embark on a charming journey to restore the beauty of Ikonei Island amidst the challenges of nature and the threats of pirates. Set in a vibrant and colorful world filled with mysteries to uncover, the game offers a mix of crafting, exploration, and creature taming, all wrapped in a wholesome narrative suitable for players of all ages. It’s reminiscent of a few Switch games you might have played, but this is a multiplatform release that we tested on a PS5.

In Ikonei Island, players take on the roles of four young protagonists who find themselves stranded on the island after escaping the clutches of pirates. Tasked with restoring the island to its former glory by a benevolent spirit named Sariel, players must embark on a journey of exploration and restoration, befriending the island’s inhabitants and thwarting the plans of greedy pirates along the way.

The gameplay revolves around familiar core mechanics such as crafting, questing, and monster taming. As players explore the island, they’ll encounter various challenges and puzzles that require them to utilize their crafting skills and the unique abilities of their animal companions. From restoring ancient shrines to nurturing crops and taming creatures, there’s lots to do on Ikonei Island – which will certainly evoke memories of games like Animal Crossing at times.

One of the highlights of Ikonei Island is its charming art style, characterized by vibrant colors and cartoonish character designs. The visuals are complemented by a relaxing soundtrack that perfectly captures the game’s laid-back atmosphere, making it a joy to explore the island at your own pace and lose track of time.

However, despite its many charms, Ikonei Island is not without its flaws. The game’s combat mechanics feel somewhat simplistic, lacking depth and strategic complexity when compared to other games. Additionally, the fixed camera perspective can sometimes obscure important visual information during gameplay, leading to mild frustration during combat encounters or exploration.

Furthermore, while the game excels in providing a family-friendly experience, it may lack depth for adult players seeking a more engaging narrative or gameplay experience. The story, while serviceable, is fairly straightforward, and the characters lack significant development beyond their initial introductions. In our opinion, this is one best enjoyed by younger players. This could also be a great family option, but there’s no option for local multiplayer.

Overall, Ikonei Island: An Earthlock Adventure is a delightful trek through a colorful and charming world, suitable for players of all ages, but especially younger ones looking for a relaxing and enjoyable gaming experience. While it may not offer the depth or complexity of some other titles, its endearing characters, charming visuals, and relaxed gameplay make it a worthwhile journey for those seeking a lighthearted adventure. Whether playing solo or with friends online, Ikonei Island offers a cozy and inviting experience.
