Rogue Flight, developed by Truant Pixel and published by Perp Games, draws its inspiration from classic arcade space shooters while offering a narrative deeply influenced by 80s and 90s anime – making for an interesting mashup. Set in the Sol system, players are thrust into a battle to reclaim humanity’s future from the AI-driven defense force, ARGUS. The blend of fast-paced combat and a branching story, coupled with retro-modern visuals and an anime flair, makes Rogue Flight stand out in a crowded genre. Kong: Survivor Instinct offers a fresh entry into the Monsterverse, blending platforming, survival elements, and environmental puzzles. Set shortly after the Godzilla vs. Kong film, the story places you in the shoes of David, an oil rig worker on a mission to rescue his daughter Stacy from a collapsing city. The narrative, though focused on the human struggle, weaves in familiar Monsterverse lore, with Titans wreaking havoc in the background and the return of eco-terrorist Alan Jonah, who leads a mercenary group known as the Hyenas. While the plot has its emotional stakes, some may find the connection between the human characters and the overwhelming threat of Titans a bit contrived, but developer 7Levels has managed to pull off an interesting take on the franchise. Hot Wheels Monster Trucks: Stunt Mayhem, developed by 3DClouds for GameMill Entertainment, aims to delivers a colorful, arcade-style experience that captures the adrenaline of its iconic toy line while embracing over-the-top monster truck action. The game boasts a variety of stunt-focused modes, offering players a fun, albeit somewhat shallow, experience as they take control of iconic vehicles designed to smash, bash, and perform gravity-defying feats. Squirrel with a Gun, as you’d expect from the title, is a quirky shooter that puts a unique spin on the sandbox genre by centering the action around an armed squirrel. Developed by Dee Dee Creations and published by Maximum Entertainment, the game offers a bizarre yet entertaining experience on the PlayStation 5. Players take on the role of a mischievous squirrel equipped with firearms, navigating a suburban neighborhood while collecting golden acorns and battling secret agents. It offers a nostalgic yet eerie homage to 90s survival horror, combining the tense atmosphere of those classic games with a narrative centered on uncovering a dark mystery in the haunted Sunnyside High. Players take on the role of Vivian, who, following a séance gone wrong, is plunged into a nightmarish version of her school while trying to find her friend Amy and avoid a terrifying creature lurking in the shadows.
