Redfall review (PC)

The eagerly anticipated Redfall is the latest game from Arkane Austin, the studio behind hit games such as Deathloop and Dishonored. Set in the small town of Redfall, Massachusetts, players must take on a legion of vampires who have taken over the island and blocked out the sun, leaving the town’s inhabitants stranded and fighting for their lives. While the game is not without its flaws, Redfall ultimately delivers an enjoyable experience that’s worth playing and should get better as time goes on.

One of the game’s most significant strengths is its story campaign, which is deep and engaging. The game’s narrative takes players on a journey through Redfall’s richly detailed open world, filled with memorable characters, interesting side quests, and plenty of vampire-slaying action. The story is well-written, with well-crafted dialogue and strong voice acting that adds to the game’s overall immersion. Each of the four playable characters has their own unique backstory, motivations, and abilities, making for a diverse and compelling cast of heroes.

Visually, Redfall is great. The game’s art direction and attention to detail are top-notch, creating a world that’s both beautiful and haunting. The town of Redfall is filled with atmospheric locations, from abandoned buildings and spooky forests to decimated boardwalks and seaside vistas. The lighting effects are particularly noteworthy, with dynamic shadows and reflections that help bring the game’s world to life. The sound design is equally impressive, with a moody soundtrack that complements the game’s gothic horror setting. The voice acting is excellent, with each character’s voice actor delivering believable performances that help flesh out their personalities.

In terms of gameplay, Redfall is a solid solo/co-op shooter that offers a satisfying mix of gunplay and special abilities. The game allows players to squad up with up to three other players and play either online or locally to take on the vampire horde. Each character has their own unique abilities and weapons, allowing players to experiment with different playstyles and loadouts. The game’s difficulty curve is well-balanced, with enemies that scale based on the number of players in the game. The AI is competent, with enemies that can be challenging to take down but never feel unfair.

One of the game’s potential drawbacks is its lack of enemy variety. While the vampire enemies are well-designed and challenging to fight, players may find themselves facing the same types of enemies repeatedly throughout the game. Additionally, some players may find the game’s difficulty level too easy, especially when playing with a full squad of experienced players. Another potential issue is the game’s technical state at launch. While the game is generally stable, we’ve been experiencing bugs and glitches that can impact the overall experience.

Overall, Redfall is a game that’s worth playing, but could have been better. The game’s story campaign is deep and engaging, the visuals and sound are top-notch, and the gameplay is solid. But while it’s a fun and enjoyable experience for fans of co-op shooters and action games, it’s not without its flaws, which include technical issues and repetitive enemy encounters and mission designs. If you’re looking for a game that offers both solo and co-op play, with a richly detailed world and engaging story, Redfall is worth checking out but should have been better at launch.
